The Rusty Brine Lobster Claw is made by Merrymeeting Clay. Each ceramic claw is cast from an actual Maine lobster, with a chrome bottle opener or stopper attached to make each claw a functional work of art. While each and every claw is unique, we offer several standard glaze styles so you can select the perfect claw to complement your kitchen, bar, or restaurant.
Merrymeeting Clay is a small ceramics studio located on Merrymeeting Bay in Bath, Maine, created through a partnership between Jackie and Kai. This married pair of lifelong crafters (Kai) and visual artists (Jackie) believe that the objects we surround ourselves with have a direct impact on the quality of our lives.
Simple objects can brighten our days simply by being there. Kai and Jackie want to provide you with more of these objects. With designs inspired by the Maine coast, they make hand-crafted ceramic objects for your home that are as unique as each one of us.
Their process typically begins with natural forms that they find enticing, like lobster claws. They are also inspired by richly textured driftwood, or horseshoe crab shells, and other coast of Maine pieces of nature. Then they create a high quality mold of the form. This allows them to preserve all the fine details of the form so that they can recreate and re-purpose them using clay.
They use their molds with a variety of porcelain and stoneware clays and add a variety of glazes and sometimes attachments too. Like our New England Claws, which are made from molds of Maine lobster claws epoxied to a bottle opener or bottle stopper. Hand wash only with warm, soapy water. Note that we use non-toxic beeswax to seal the slight opening between the chrome opener and the ceramic claw. This can be melted in hot water or scraped away with excessive scrubbing. It is designed to fit comfortably in your hand. While each claw differs slightly, the typical size is approximately 7 x 2.5 x 1.25 inches.
