Captain Mowatt’s Hot Saucesare made about a mile away from our store in Portland’s Old Port. Captain Mowatt’s was established in 1997 in Portland, Maine. Named after British naval officer Captain Henry Mowatt, who bombarded the city of Portland in 1775 aboard the HMS Canceaux.  Today, Captain Mowatt’s fiery fleet continues to burn the planet one tongue at a time.
Making hot sauce is their passion. They blend the finest chili peppers with fresh fruits and vegetables to create unmatched flavors. Whether you’re new to hot sauce or a fanatic, Captain Mowatt’s has a savory sauce for every craving.
These hot sauces are very shelf stable due to their low ph levels. We like to tell customers our shelf life is 2 years after the born on date. Always refrigerate after opening.

Blue Flame : Maine Blueberry Hot Sauce.
Heat Level: 7/10
Blue Flame is the ultimate combination of native Maine blueberries blended with fiery red chilies.
Ingredients: Native Maine Blueberries, Red Chili Peppers, Cane Sugar, Water, Cider Vinegar, Salt, Spices, Xanthan Gum & Maine Seaweed.
Try It! : Pork chops, ribs, brisket, or even your morning oatmeal. This is a must for grilled or blackened salmon. Mix with mayonnaise or tartar sauce for fish sticks.

Boston Red Sauce : The perfect combination of Maine cranberries, red chili peppers and a tang of orange. A New England favorite.
Heat Level: 7/10
Ingredients: Cranberries, Cranberry Juice, Cider Vinegar, Chile Peppers, Brown Sugar, Orange Juice, Sea Salt, Xanthan Gum & Maine Seaweed.
Try It! : Mix with some mayonnaise and put it on a turkey sandwich with thin slices of apples and some good cheddar cheese. Use as a glaze for smoked turkey, chicken and pork. Spice up your Waldorf chicken salad.

Canceaux Hot Sauce : The sauce that started it all.  Canceaux is our flagship hot sauce and to this day, remains our most popular.  A sweet, garlic flavor with a kick.  Truly addicting.

Ingredients: Four types of red chili peppers, Water, Cane Sugar, Vinegar, Garlic, Salt, Xanthan gum & Maine seaweed.
Try It! :  Everything and anything that needs flavor and heat. Canceaux is the Swiss army knife of sauces. Great on steaks, chicken, seafood and steamed vegetables. Pour some on your nachos, pizza, tacos, mac’n cheese or your favorite sandwich. Mix with cream cheese to create the best dip you’ve ever had.

The HMS Canceaux was used by Captain Henry Mowatt to bombard Falmouth Neck, in 1775.  Canceaux was a 16-gun hydrographic survey sloop. Its original job was conducting coastal surveys of Atlantic Canada and New England.  The name Canceaux comes from a fishing village in Nova Scotia. The village is now known by its modern spelling as Canso, but was also known as Canseau and Canceaux, depending on the map.  The name Canso came from the Mi’kmaq word kamsook which means “opposite the lofty cliff.”

Canceaux TURBEAUX : Ask and you shall receive. Thy listened to fans and created a spicier version of the iconic Canceaux Sauce. A sweet, garlic flavor with more kick. Truly addicting.
