So Fresh & So Clean, Clean!

Nothing says “clean home” like the feeling of walking barefoot on CLEAN FLOORS! ????
Replace your boring ole’ dustpan with one of these Vacationland cuties–each handmade by a retired safety officer for the Maine Dept. of Inland Fisheries & Wildlife, by resourcing old Maine license plates!

Enjoy Earth Day OUTSIDE, and make dinner on the grill tonight! But don’t forget to clean up after. If you use a bristled grill scraper, did you know that those wiry bristles can come loose and fall into your grill…or worse, your delicious food? Try one of these new wooden grill scrapers instead, made from reclaimed hardwood flooring. It even features a nifty bottle opener, for efficient multitasking! ????

Lobster Rope That’ll Last You a Lifetime

Ridding the ocean of plastic, one rope at a time.
These mats and baskets are created from new and recycled lobster rope material, preventing it from being left behind as a potential wildlife hazard. Because the rope takes years–even decades–to deteriorate, these mats and baskets can endure the elements of each season. Add a pop of color wherever you might need it and shop our selection of lobster rope products, knowing that with your purchase, you’re paying it forward to our planet.

Give It Up For All Those PAW-some Pets Out There!

From all the staff (& their pets) here at Lisa-Marie’s, we wish you and yours a HAPPY NATIONAL PET DAY! Hope you spoil yours with a healthy treat, a new toy, or an extra long walk ????

NEW ONLINE: 100% Cat-Tested and Approved Catnip ????

Marissa, our Portland store assistant manager and marketing assistant (hello, hello!), has been purchasing these little sachets of cat-joy for years and was very excited when it was decided to make them available on our website. She has 3 cats (and 2 dogs, some chickens…etc.) and tried to include them in the product photos–but the catnip’s SO good, she couldn’t keep them still! Featured up top is an image she managed to capture of her calico, Paisley, surveying the grand selection of her favorite toy…before they were safely put away for YOUR kitty to enjoy next.

Luna (featured on right) LOVES these little cat nip sachets. Her favorite way to play with them is by holding it with all four paws and rolling around. (P.S. She’s still learning to share.) ????

If You Weren’t Already Best Friends With Your Dog, You Will Be Now (With These Treats) ????

If there’s one thing Rolo (left) and Roxy (right) agree on, its how much they LOVE these Moose Poop Dog Treats. With the telltale crinkle of the bag they come running, willing to do any of their various tricks to be rewarded with one of the delicious, peanut butter and oat treats that mom brings home from work. Roxy and Rolo were best friends with their humans at first sight…but these tasty treats are just the cherry (or should we say “dog biscuit?”) on top!

Keep Your Paws Off My Dog Balm ????

This all natural balm is specially formulated to heal rough, chapped, dry dog paw pads and snouts. It helps create a protective barrier while also locking in moisture and helping prevent dryness and damage. It’s safe for your pup, even when licked off! Ingredients include coconut oil, olive oil, beeswax, and calendula. Ripley and Lucy’s parents apply it to their paws on cold, winter days and before/after long walks or hikes in the Maine woods!

Picture ???? Perfect: Train Your Pup with Organic Maine Blueberry Dog Biscuits

Do you have a new four-legged friend in your life? Well, believe it or not, handsome Hank (featured, on left) was adopted from a rescue just a year ago! If you have a new dog, you may know the struggles of obedience training…let alone getting them to sit still for a photo. With plenty of patience, a balanced amount of healthy treats, and Quincy (featured, on right) as a wonderful doggy role model, Hank’s parents have trained him to listen and behave, while providing him a fabulous life alongside his furry older sister.

???? ???? ???? ????

“Pets are not our whole life, but they make our lives whole.”

Give your pet a hug from all of us here at Lisa-Marie’s–we know they deserve it. ????

Oh Baby, April Has Arrived!

Cute as a hedgehog and ever so dear, a sweet little baby will soon be here!

Whether your baby is from Maine or “from away”, start them off right with Maine made goodies created with the littlest Mainers in mind.

From nautical lobster and woodsy moose prints to hand-sewn patterned Maine patches, there’s a perfect onesie for the little one in your life to flaunt their love of this beautiful northern state.

Did you know that tiny things are instantly more precious? And by “precious” we mean: adorable, darling, cute etcetera. And maybe it’s more of an opinion than a fact, but to us it’s absolutely true. Tiny hands, tiny feet, tiny fingers, tiny toes…and what better to protect those toes than these little booties, available in various colors and patterns! Available in either 3-6 month or 9-12 month sizes to keep your little one comfortable while they grow.

Where do your baby’s toys come from? What are they made with? It’s easy these days to just ask yourself “will they enjoy this?” when the more important question is “will this be safe for them?”

These hybrid rattles and teethers are handmade with locally-sourced products and have passed federal safety regulations.
Each toy is made from solid hardwood maple, painted with a non toxic water based acrylic, and sealed with a blend of carnauba wax, beeswax and mineral oil.

Give them the gift that lasts beyond babyhood: books!

Reading is VERY important (and enjoyable) for infants–the younger, the better! Hosting a baby shower, or a birthday get-together for your little one? Maybe feature this poem on the invitation:

“Just one request, we hope it’s not hard. Please bring a book instead of a card. By signing your name, we’ll remember and share your special gift, even when you’re not there.”

A collection of childhood classics, Make Way for McCloskey, features 8 children’s stories written by Robert McCloskey, all in one hard cover book:

  1. Make Way for Ducklings
  2. Blueberries for Sal
  3. Lentil
  4. Time of Wonder
  5. One Morning in Maine
  6. Burt Dow, Deep-Water Man
  7. Homer Price
  8. Centerburg Tales

And what about Board Books?

The NY Times suggests, “Becoming a reader starts as soon as your baby pays attention to board books.” The unique design of a board book is the perfect introduction to reading. They allow babies to explore the text and pictures with each of their senses safely. By showing babies that reading is fun and that they can play with books, you are fostering an early love of reading.

And no baby gift is complete without a stuffed animal…

Strong WoMEn of History

i stand

on the sacrifices

of a million women before me

thinking

what can I do

to make this mountain taller

so the women after me

can see farther.

legacy

You know what’s overwhelming, but in the best way possible? Researching the vital role women have had on our world’s history. I had planned on curating a list of a few, well-known women of the past and the present, but that list has doubled…then tripled. Even now, I know I’m leaving out hundreds–no, thousands–of important figures, both celebrated and hidden within our history. But as I launch into the ones I have selected to feature, I hope I can inspire you to do a little research on your own. Discover the women you had never been taught about; find the ladies who’s hard work shaped the world you live in today; delve into your favorite hobbies and subjects and realize that there are women around the globe, both young and old, who’ve had a role in every single one of them–even if they haven’t been acknowledged for it…yet. So this March, let’s wish one another a happy Women’s History Month, and take a moment to celebrate a few women you may not know much about:

Barton risked her life to bring supplies and support to soldiers in the field during the Civil War. She founded the American Red Cross in 1881, at age 59, and led it for the next 23 years. Her understanding of the ways she could provide help to people in distress guided her throughout her life. By the force of her personal example, she opened paths to the new field of volunteer service. Her intense devotion to serving others resulted in enough achievements to fill several ordinary lifetimes.

In 1826, she escaped slavery with her infant daughter. In 1828, Truth brought a case to recover her son to court and won the filing. She was the first black woman to achieve such victory over a white man. She toured with abolitionist George Thompson, speaking to large crowds on slavery and human rights. While he spoke to the United States’ role in perpetuating slavery, she advocated for racial equality. Her Civil War work earned her an invitation to meet President Abraham Lincoln in 1864. She continued to be an outspoken advocate for civil and women’s rights until her death in 1883.

Valentina Tereshkova was the first woman to go into space. She once said, “If women can be railroad workers in Russia, why can’t they fly into space?” In 1963, she spent almost three days (70 hours) in space and orbited Earth 48 times in her space capsule, Vostok 6. Tereshkova never flew in space again. Later, she became a test pilot and instructor and earned a doctorate in technical sciences. She remains active in the space community, and her legacy is widely celebrated in everything from books to museums to stage productions.

Marie Curie, née Maria Sklodowska was born and raised in Warsaw, Poland. She moved to Paris and together with her husband Pierre, she was awarded half of the Nobel Prize for Physics in 1903, for their study into the spontaneous radiation. In 1911, she was awarded a second Nobel Prize in Chemistry for her discoveries and studies of the elements radium and polonium. She is the only woman so far, who has received two Nobel Prizes. Following the tragic death of Pierre Curie in 1906, she took his place as Professor of General Physics in the Faculty of Sciences, the first time a woman had held this position.

Griffith started running at age seven, chasing jackrabbits to increase her speed. At the 1988 US Olympic trials in Indianapolis, she ran the 100m in 10.49 seconds, a world record that still stands. After retiring in 1989, Griffith Joyner established a foundation for underprivileged children and from 1993 to 1995 served as the co-chair of the President’s Council on Physical Fitness. She was inducted into the Track and Field Hall of Fame in 1995.

Dorothy Elizabeth Levitt was a renowned pioneer of female independence and female motoring; a victorious speedboat driver, holder of the water speed record, and holder of the Ladies World Land speed record. In 1906, Levitt broke the women’s world speed record for the flying kilometer, recording a speed of 91 mph and received the sobriquet the “Fastest Girl on Earth”. Amongst many safety tips, she encouraged women to use hand mirrors to see their blind spot while driving–which was the precursor to the rearview mirror that cars have today.

After suffering from a scalp ailment that resulted in her own hair loss, Madam C.J. Walker, born Sarah Breedlove, created specialized hair products for African American hair in 1905 and was one of the first American women to become a self-made millionaire. She once said, “I want the great masses of my people to take a greater pride in their personal appearance and to give their hair proper attention.”

At 11 years old Malala Yousafzai, a young Pakistani student, wrote an anonymous diary about what life was like under the extreme rule of the Taliban in Northwest Pakistan. She wrote that she believed all girls should be allowed to go to school, and became well-known through her diary for fighting for her right to an education. In October of 2012, the Taliban shot her after discovering her writing: but she survived. At 14 years old, she won the Nobel Peace Prize, and has continued to campaign for girl’s rights all over the world.

Beth’s 2020 Customized Ornaments

How does Beth feel about painting your memories?

As far back as I can remember, I have always loved making Christmas ornaments. I would make them for my own Christmas tree during my children’s growing years and for gift for family and friends. I would make them all year long. So it only seemed natural that 10 years ago, when I start my part time creative business, it began with selling my hand painted ornaments. Four years ago, I quit my day job of 21 years and went full time to keep up with growing demand. I have never looked back. I truly love what I do, because my ornaments become part of family traditions and celebrations, markers of time and important events. So when I get a request to customize an ornament, it makes me happy and when that same family comes back the next year for another custom ornament to add to their family tree and memories – pure joy.

Every year, Beth creates customized ornaments for our customers. 2020 had lots of babies!

Welcome to the world Ashton, Charles, John, Maggie and Wyatt!

And, Congratulations to Melissa & Evan on your first year of marriage!

Are you interested in having an ornament created to commemorate a special event in your life?
Email marie@lisamariesmadeinmaine.com
to get started! Beth gets very busy the closer to the end of the year we get so it’s never too early to place your order.

New Year, New Resolutions: Part 1

A new year, a fresh start, a blank slate. 2021 brings with it the opportunity to set some new goals, and begin the next 365 days with a fresh mindset. It’s important to set aside a moment–whether it be the few minutes you take to sit and eat breakfast before heading into work, or the afternoon of your day off–to pause and reflect on this past year. 2020 was a heavy one, but amidst the chaos and uncertainty, there are memories of hope, joy, happiness, and relaxation. There may be many, there may be few. But in order to put the past behind us and start afresh, it’s a kindness to yourself to find those positive instances and REMEMBER them. It’s a nurturing “retreat” for your mind. Follow this by setting your goals, intentions, and habits for the new year, and set yourself up for success. Lisa-Marie, Andy, and Marie, along with some wonderful staff members accompanied me in this exercise, and in a way the act of sharing these New Year Resolutions made this experience even more meaningful.

Lisa-Marie & Andy Stewart

Andy has set three specific goals this year:

  1. For the Home–Clean out the basement and the attic.
  2. For the Business–Get the files in order.
  3. For Himself–Read more!

Reflecting on the importance of communication, especially in a time period defined by quarantine and separation:

After hearing that a long-distance friend had passed, he realized he hadn’t set aside time to reach out and talk to them. “To address my regret, I vowed to call my friends when I think of them.” Since then many friends have received calls from him out of the blue. “Even if it was just a quick ‘Hey, I was thinking of you, hope you are well’ message on their voice mail.”

One thing to take away from the year 2020:

Enjoy friends and family every chance you get. And luckily, though many events were rescheduled or cancelled this past year, he was still able to watch his son marry his life partner. A simpler, smaller ceremony, set along the southern Maine coastline on Goose Rocks Beach, was the perfect way for their family to watch and (safely) be a part of such a monumental moment.

Lisa-Marie’s New Year’s Resolution focuses on her business and her team.

“My resolution for this New Year is to help my employees shine, the way they have supported our small business and helped us persevere.”

“They have each shown their own individual strengths throughout this past year, skills and talents that got us through. They never gave up and I am so grateful for that. This coming year I hope to be able to help each of them grow as the business grows and adapt to this ever-changing world. The incredible team behind Lisa-Marie’s Made in Maine is my bright spot of 2020 and I look forward to showcasing their skills and talents in 2021.”

2020 has shown Lisa-Marie what a strong and supportive staff she has in both shop locations. They have worked together from the beginning of this pandemic and never wavered throughout our ups and downs. “I know 2021 will still have some challenges, but with their support we will be okay.”

Marie Stewart Harmon

Marie’s New Year’s Resolution focuses on her body’s well-being.

“[I plan] to take better care of my body, specifically with yoga. I had the most body-confidence and felt the strongest in my body when I was doing yoga 4-5 days a week.” After not practicing regularly for years, she’d love to make yoga a regular practice again, not just for physical improvements but for the benefits yoga has on both mental and emotional strength. “After having surgeries on both my feet in 2019, and the healing that took place in 2020, I am eager to seamlessly move in and out of the oh-so-gratifying downward dog!”

During 2020, Marie was also able to check off something on her bucket list. “After an actual decade of telling my husband that I would take him to Morse Mountain in Phippsburg, we finally made it. This is one of my favorite places on earth and after not having visited for about 15 years, I made the trip–twice!! Once in the summer with a dear friend lounging on the beach with snacks and dips in the cold Atlantic, and once on a foggy fall day, donning hoodies and basking in the natural beauty of marsh with the changing foliage as a backdrop. Both days were beautiful in their own way.”

What did the value of technology and communication teach her? “That good god, I MUST call my grandmother more! As my last remaining grandparent I recognize how lucky I am to still have her in my life. And in this time where it’s safest for me to stay physically away from her, calling her on the phone and chatting for a few minutes is the best I can do. I miss her so much!”

The Bath Crew:

Featuring Irene & Kay

Irene Austin

Irene started off by saying she didn’t think she had any “real” New Year’s resolutions. She then continued to tell me what she hopes to do in 2021, a perfect way of setting goals (AKA resolutions) for a healthy, happy new year. “I do plan to spend more time outside when that is possible, and I look forward to hugging family members and friends when that is possible, too! And I hope to sew a few more quilts for family members I haven’t yet gifted.” Irene make quilts for births, birthdays, weddings, and graduations for her family and close friends. This skillful hobby of hers is something she continues to reflect on.

“One of my quilting projects this year was inspired by all the ties my husband Joel wore when he worked in schools for 45 years as a psychologist, school counselor, assistant principal, athletic director, principal, and administrator of a career and tech high school. He had over 100 beautiful, fun and some silly ties!” When Joel retired, she cut them down and made him a huge “re-tie-rment” quilt. But she still had many ties left! “I decided that each of his 3 daughters, plus one daughter’s partner, should also have a lap quilt of some of his ties, and tried to include the ones they had given him.” She called this project “Family Ties.” It was very important to her–she’s really missed gathering with them, celebrating holidays, having family fun. “I wanted each of them to have a gift of love sooner rather than later – who knows what could happen during a pandemic? And one thing the pandemic and my husband’s Parkinson’s diagnosis has taught me is to not postpone joy.”

Kay Fraser

Kay reflected on many wonderful memories and experiences she had during 2020, one of which is a new furry family member: a Weimaraner mix rescue from Arkansas. His training and adjustment to northern life is coming along nicely. “However, there’s one problem: Banjo is a stealthy counter surfer! HE is training US to place food far from his scavenging nose. So far we’ve lost a plateful of burgers, a package of hot dogs and half of an apple pie…breaking my favorite pie plate.”

2020 was no match for her yearly Christmas traditions. For more than ten years, 15–20 of Kay’s 1962 college friends have met in Freeport for a Christmas lunch. “Not to be squelched by COVID, we Zoomed. It was wonderful, and those who live too far away to drive were able to join us for the first time. Who says 80 year olds aren’t tech savvy?”

At the beginning of the pandemic, Kay decided to grow her hair. “I now have what I call my ‘COVID Shag!’ Haven’t had hair this long since high school.” She says that the day of her second COVID shot will be haircut day.

As 2020 transitioned to 2021, she shares a beautiful memory: “welcoming the new year in a very special way that I envision will become our new tradition…just the two of us slow dancing in the kitchen,” *cue romantic slow dance song.*

Stay tuned for Part 2 of Lisa-Marie’s New Year’s Resolutions,

and remember to stay healthy, happy, and hopeful this year.

New Year, New Resolutions Part 2

The Portland Crew:

Barb, Marissa, & Amanda

Barbora McCrillis

Barb’s got a few mountains to tackle in 2021…

She wants to set aside time to do more of the things she enjoys. "I am going to dedicate more time to Keramika Designs. I would [also] really LOVE to start a huge hiking commitment called the NH 48." This consists of hiking all 48 4000-foot mountains in New Hampshire. "My other goal is to finally finish the construction on the second floor and move into the brand spankin' new upstairs–a project that began on Easter and taken much much longer than planned."

"Looking back, I realized that though our social time was limited, the best memories I have to reflect on were memories I shared with others. Overall, I think this year has put into perspective how important it is to put effort into reaching out to others. As a result, FaceTime, Skype and Zoom ended up being very valuable resources that allowed me to connect with many friends, as well as my family across the ocean.

A furry addition to the year 2020: "We added another four-legged floof (named Hank) to the fam that’s been keeping us on our toes all year long. Even though we are often frustrated with training an intelligent and energetic dog, we wouldn’t change a thing.

Amanda Eaton

Amanda’s New Year’s Resolution focuses on some key parts of life: joy and gratitude. “To laugh every day and be grateful. Those really deep belly laughs have been popping up more often. It’s amazing!”

She’s full of talent, energy, motivation and spontaneity, and these are the things that have fueled some of her favorite memories this past year, including the last play she performed at Mad Horse in January, The Effect. “It was a fantastic play. Super challenging emotionally, great storyline, amazing cast-mates, brilliant director, awesome production crew. I didn’t realize it would be my first and last of 2020. Since then I’ve written, shot, directed and edited my own material so I’m pretty proud of that." Also, as an avid hiker, Amanda reflected on her amazing hiking adventures with her partner, Brendan.

Favorite spot visited in 2020: Grafton Notch State Park! A gorgeous park with hiking, caves, moose and waterfalls!

One thing she's learned this past year? "I’ve learned that by going vegan, I’ve pretty much erased my migraines, and my vertigo spells have lessened! I’m feeling better than I have in a really long time."

Marissa Carville

Hey there, I’m the writer! Last (but not least) I’d like to share my New Year’s Resolutions with you:

  • Keep track of my reading. I’m an avid reader, and though I feel as though I flew through numerous books in 2020, I realize that–as captivating as many of them were–I can’t recall them all. In 2020, I began an Instagram page (@readsbyriss) dedicated to reviewing and recommending books, and I plan to stay on top of posting new reads more often…and maybe even begin a blog of my own.
  • Incorporate intentional movement and exercise into my weekly routine. Since I was young, I was an athlete; playing sports like softball, basketball, and volleyball. These team sports kept me active through all seasons, and I think the toughest part was transitioning from group-based exercise to individual. I strive to motivate myself more, try new things like cycling, yoga, and running as well as looking for SAFE activities to do with friends.

  • Call/write letters/communicate with loved ones more. With a year like 2020, I had moments to reconnect with friends I hadn’t been in touch with as often as I would have liked. I plan to put more effort into these long-distance friendships, because that connection is important to me. And similar to Marie, I need to call my grandmother more! She deserves it, and she’s a lovely lady to chat with.
  • One of my top goals: EXPLORE MORE. I know long-distance travel is not something I can do anytime soon, but I’d love to at lease explore Maine, a state I’ve lived in for almost 4 years and haven’t even seen a fraction of.

My favorite memory of 2020? Well, I have a few.

One would involve our newest *furry* family member, Lucy. A German Shepherd mix rescue, we adopted her from the Greater Portland Animal Refuge League on my birthday–and playing with her was a lovely way to celebrate.

Another was my fiancé and I’s first camping trip together (with BOTH dogs) at Moosehead Lake, a place I had never been before.

And lastly? We were planning to have our wedding on September 26, 2020 but due to COVID-19 and not wanting to put anyone’s health at risk, we postponed it to 2021. On that day, we ventured to North Conway for an intimate, mini weekend full of hiking, dog snuggles, and celebrating a “woulda-been” moment that we are still looking forward to having this year.

2020 felt like a blur before I wrote these memories down. I’m grateful for these moments, big and small, and happy I’m able to enter 2021 on a positive note.

Farewell 2020, Hello 2021

Get Excited About The Future, The Past Won’t Mind

Lisa-Marie’s Made in Maine is a small, local, family-owned business.
Pictured here are the three individuals who have worked together to build what this business has become:
a place where Maine Makers shine, staff feels like family, and visitors are able to take their favorite MEmories home.

This New Year’s Day:
Andy will be able to (finally) sit back and enjoy his favorite Maine whiskey,
Marie will be able to catch up on all her dog (and husband) snuggles,
…and as for Lisa-Marie?
Hopefully she’ll take a step away from being a business owner for the day,
(AKA, the Lisa-Marie)
and join her husband for a celebratory 2021 drink.
But while there may be a beverage in one hand,
there’s bound to be a paintbrush in the other.

There’s a time between the end of
a year and the beginning of a new one that calls for a little reflection.
2020 may have felt like a blur,
or the longest year yet.
It threw us curveballs of
heartache and long-distance,
zoom meetings and health protocols.
And as we look ahead to 2021 we can take a deep breath and know,
that this year will be different–because we’ve learned a lot from staying hoME.

But not everyone was able to stay home.
A HUGE thank you to all of the
HEALTHCARE,
Grocery Store, Child Care, Education, Transportation, Waste Management,
and other Essential Workers,
who never let 2020 prevent them from doing their jobs.
