Meet the Makers: July 2023

Meet the Maker #4: July 1st – Heritage Days! 🎆

Featuring Gail of Miller Designs and Dan of Cobbs Hill Sugarhouse👇

Gail, Miller Designs

Miller Designs was established by Gail Barker Miller in 1990 when she decided that commuting to work on the mainland from her island home was more than she could handle with two small children. Her tenure at Heritage Lanterns in Yarmouth, Maine gave her the metalsmith training, and her interest in arts and crafts gave her the ideas, to start creating beautiful barrettes. Since then, her line has expanded to include pins, earrings, bracelets, ornaments, and other treasures!

Dan, Cobbs Hill Sugarhouse

Maple syrup is a true gift from nature — and we take our job seriously.

Cobbs Hill Sugarhouse is a small-scale operation located in Mount Vernon, roughly the center of Maine. The family has been making maple syrup for nearly two decades, and adding novel infusions for about five. They enjoy the work and relish the look on each new customer’s face when they taste their cool blends!

Meet the Maker #5: July 13th

Featuring Ben of Benjamin Williamson Photography and Charlie of Maine Towns Playing Cards👇

What do both Ben and Charlie have in common?

They love exploring their hoME state.

“Maine is just a really special place. It has a unique variety of landscapes, and being in Waterville, it’s a good central location. I can go an hour in any direction and have a completely different landscape you know, one hour to the coast, the mountains, the lakes.

– Charlie

Maine Towns Playing Cards

Charlie, Maine Towns and Maine Islands Playing Cards

the way playing cards should be

Charlie is a college student who designed this deck over the last couple years. He grew up in Maine and has a passion for its beautiful geography, which led him to design this deck as well as visit all 430 towns in Maine before he went to college. He is very excited to share the playing cards with people who love Maine just as much as he does!

Ben, Benjamin Williamson Photography

My obsession with photography started in 2012 while working nights tending bar at the Sea Dog in Topsham, Maine. At first I simply wanted to capture the beauty I was coming across on hikes and walks near home. I quickly discovered that a photograph could be more than just a document. It was like putting down my experiences in a visual diary, capturing thoughts and feelings I was having about whatever was in front of me. Like my other love, music, it could be a creative and expressive act.

Meet the Maker #6: July 29th – A “Family Affair”

Featuring Mary & Joe Devenney of Devenney Pottery AND their daughter Nina of Wild Rosie! 👇

Mary and Joe, Devenney Pottery

When you’re involved in the arts it’s a real gift. It’s not like when you reach a certain age you have to retire and figure out what to do. You can keep on doing what you’ve done, you know? It’s awesome, I feel pretty lucky.

– Mary

Nina, Wild Rosie Maine

Being raised by artists made my childhood a lot of great things — They taught me how to throw pots when I was 6 and I thought everyone had raku firings and bonfires in the backyard on the weekends.

– Nina

Another Devenney family member, (daughter & sister!) Angie, made an appearance during the event. She and her sister Nina were modeling Angie’s handmade polymer clay earrings…

Meet the Makers: May – June 2023

Meet the Maker #1: May 27th – The KICKOFF to 20 Years!

Featuring Tenley of Lobster Designs and David of Mainely Pens👇

Tenley, Lobster Designs

Tenley, the one woman show behind Lobster Designs, is a jewelry designer and creator who uses resourced shells from local fishermen in her community as the focus of her jewelry. Her lobster shells primarily come from the lobstermen in her family: her husband, J. Seiders and her young son, E. Seiders. Her oyster shells and mussel shells come from local coves and rivers in the South Bristol area. Using these foraged shells, Tenley makes a wide variety of jewelry featuring the local Maine crustaceans. Shop her collection in-store and online today!

David, Mainely Pens

David, the man behind Mainely Pens, made his first turnings as a child in his father’s basement shop. Now David provides beautiful pens created from composite wood combinations and local Maine wood. He has even challenged himself further by making pens from deer antler as well as crushed Maine lobster, oyster, and mussel shells! Each pen is made one at a time, by hand, causing them to be one-of-a-kind with no two looking exactly alike.

Meet the Maker #2: June 3rd

Featuring Kate of Bixby Chocolate and Joe of Vintage Works👇

Kate, Bixby Chocolate

Kate McAleer founded Bixby Chocolate in December 2011. Kate boldly broke away from a traditional career path to pursue her passion: chocolate. She is a socially responsible business owner who is very supportive of her local Maine community of Rockland.

Kate ensures that the quality organic cocoa beans are directly sourced from Caribbean countries such as the Dominican Republic and Haiti, Belize and Central America’s Guatemala.

Bixby Chocolate’s innovations include producing its own chocolate straight from the cocoa bean for several new bean-to-bar chocolate bars, and its newly created chocolate bonbons, chocolate nibs and chocolate-covered coffee beans.

The Lobstah Trap Caddy is handcrafted in Maine constructed from authentic Maine lobster trap material by Joe Hamilton.

He is the first in Maine to make these types of beer and condiment caddies having started in 2010.

“I was a woodworker for quite a few years and I built a wooden caddy to hold six craft beers and one day I thought I’d make something different out of lobster wire.”

Now, retired, Joe works 20 hours a week in his shop.

Meet the Maker #3: June 17th

Featuring Sue of Latitude 43 designs and Pam of Olde Haven Farm👇

Sue, Latitude 43 Designs & Gilded Oyster Co.

The allure of the oyster & the natural beauty of Maine’s rugged coast inspire each unique shell.

Maine Maker, Sue Clark, has always loved oysters – but the shucking, not so much. “My partner and I developed the Kraken oyster grip, [making] shucking safer and easier and we started buying lots of Maine oysters.” Which meant lots of shells. So Sue decided to decoupage them, gluing decorated paper on each prepared shell. Now that’s what we call a sustainable & recycled product!

How does Sue collect her shells? Well, she and her husband enjoy them first by using their own tool, the Kraken, to shuck them easily before slurping!

Pam of Olde Haven Farm

We have a knack for creating wonderful & unique flavors.

“To create our fine foods, we use our own harvest and animals and source other regional ingredients from our neighbors. We evolve classic recipes and draw upon world cuisines, often combining unexpected flavors such as Maple Bourbon pickles, Blueberry Lavender jam and Coconut Curry sausage. Our dream is for everything you bring home from us to be refined and extraordinary.”

Olde Haven’s diversified family farm is rustic and real. They believe in knowing where our food comes from, and that animals deserve happy, healthy, natural lives.

To create their fine foods, they use their own harvest and animals and source other regional ingredients from their neighbors.

👈

Lisa-Marie couldn’t help herself from snacking on the delicious array of samples during the event! Pam brought 3 pickles and 3 preserves for customers (and staff) to taste-test and enjoy.

2022 – a look back.

WINTER

The middle of January means that the Lisa-Marie’s team finally gets to unwind a little bit after the fast-paced holiday season and the tediousness of end-of-year inventory. It also means that we get to close the store for the day and celebrate each other with our employee and family staff party. It’s one of the only times of year that we’re all in the same place so we always try to commemorate it with a group photo. 👆

Marie will always snag the opportunity for a photo op with Lisa-Marie, especially if it’s to feature new fun product. After years and years of working together, they still find moments to appreciate the fact that they are best friends as well as mother and daughter. 👈

WinterFest in Bath is a great reason to brave the cold elements and celebrate this time of year. It was great fun being visited by the Abominable Snowman. The 2023 Winterfest is scheduled for February 10 and 11.

SPRING

April 2022 marked twelve years of business on Exchange Street in Portland, Maine. We have loved being there so much and are so grateful to our customers that we decided to give out twelve gift cards ranging from $12 to $120.

Check out the video here. 👈

The last twelve years have flown by and we have seen a lot of changes in the Old Port. We’re grateful to still be a part of this thriving, historic downtown and hope to be here for many more years for locals and tourists alike.

In 2021 we were chosen as the Retailer of the Year by the Retail Association of Maine. It was a great honor that came with a springtime celebration, speech and plaque presentation. RAM even partnered with Black Fly Media to put together a little video about Lisa-Marie and the creation of Lisa-Marie’s Made in Maine. This video was played at the April 2022 celebration and made Lisa-Marie AND Marie tear up.

🌊 🌲 🛫

Before all the tourists started flying in and out Portland Jetport to start their visit to Vacationland we had the opportunity to revamp our kiosk. Sometimes it’s the last thing someone sees before returning to “from away” and we’re glad they get to peek at some pieces of Maine to remember their trip to the Pine Tree State.

SUMMER

Summer in Maine means we get to see all of our friends who wait for the warmer temps to visit. Norma & Jeremiah are some of our longest time customers who visit us multiple times a summer when their here as frequently as possible and it’s always a joy to have our customers become friends. Norma, Jeremiah, Lisa-Marie and Andy always make time to grab a pint and catch up on everything that happened over the fall, holidays and wintertime.

In July Lisa-Marie’s Made in Maine was chosen as a 2022 Small Business Champion and asked to visit Washington DC for the National Retail Foundation Retail Advocate Summit.

Curtis, one of the leaders at the Retail Association of Maine asked Lisa-Marie and Andy to represent Maine alongside their downtown Portland neighbor, Tom Largay of Old Port Card Co and Old Port Candy Co. They braved the heat and humidity of Capitol Hill and got to meet with Maine state representatives about issues that face small businesses in Maine, specifically retail businesses.

It was an honor to advocate to Maine and our fellow small businesses. With the tumultuous recent years we are looking forward to what the hopeful possibilities this year could bring.

July brought some fun photo opportunities with Andy as he donned a human-sized red lobster costume and bounced his way up and down Front Street bringing joy to everyone who saw him.

AUTUMN

Readers voted Lisa-Marie’s Made in Maine as 2022’s Best Gift Shop in their annual Best of Maine contest. This is our third year in a row winning this award and we are so honored and humbled by your votes. We hope to continue providing you with the very best products from Maine makers.

October brought us a fun collaboration with Sister’s Gourmet Deli, a bomb, woman-owned sandwich spot. They have locations in Bath and Portland so it felt like kismet to partner with them and reward our customers that support us both with a little discount treat.

For the second year in a row, Lisa-Marie’s Made in Maine was nominated as one of the Semi-Finalists for the Maddy Corson Small Business Award presented by the Institute of Family Owned Businesses. Lisa-Marie was battling COVID so Marie and Andy were there to represent the family and were happy to cheer on their neighbor, Loyal Biscuit, our neighbor on Front Street in Bath.

Summer brought some more fun photo opportunities with lots of friends and visitors. Dr. Pussum’s hung out with us one day with the World’s Largest Cat Nip Sack. 👈

After three siblings all wanted a Lisa-Marie’s sweatshirt and posed for a photo in front of the shop, we couldn’t help but recreate the photo to show that adults could match. We find fun everywhere. 👇

HOLIDAYS

We’ve been banking with Bath Savings Institution before Lisa-Marie’s even had a brick and mortar storefront. We’re so grateful for everything they do for our communities and when their South Portland branch asked us to put together a little holiday display for their lobby we, of course, said yes!

The Saturday after Thanksgiving marks the annual Shop Small Business Saturday. And while every day is Small Business Saturday at Lisa-Marie’s, Marie snagged the opportunity to take a silly photo to encourage folks to remember small businesses, like our family’s, for their gift giving.

Portland Downtown held their annual Holiday Window Contest and we were pleased to receive the Community Choice Award for our Winter Wonderland Window. It’s always a joy and a challenge to create a festive window featuring only a few of the hundreds of unique Maine made products we carry.

The Portland team donned their festive best for the return of Portland Downtown’s annual late night Merry Madness.

Andy returned as Lobster Clause for Bath’s Bright Night Bath. Watch his adorable video here 👈

Thank you 2022! Hello 2023, we’re so happy to see you!

Lisa-Marie’s is a Small Business Champion Honoree!

Lisa-Marie & Andy at the NRF Summit

In June of 2022, Lisa-Marie opened an e-mail saying that the folks at the National Retail Federation wanted to chat with us via zoom. At the end of the zoom call, Lisa-Marie had been invited to the NRF Retail Advocates Summit in Washington DC as a Small Business Champion Honoree. A few weeks later, we (Lisa-Marie, Andy & I (Marie!!)) packed our bags to head to our nation’s capital.

Masked up and ready to fly!

We met up with Curtis – the president of the Retail Association of Maine, and our Portland neighbor, Tom – one of the owners of Old Port Card Company and Old Port Candy Co.

While traveling to DC, Tom was representing Maine with his throwback Bangor & Aroostook railroad t-shirt from another Portland neighbor, Joseph’s.

Lisa-Marie was wearing her Casco Tote made from reclaimed sails. (We have them available at Lisa-Marie’s now!)

Early the next morning, we met up with Tom and Curtis for the breakfast for the attendees of the NRF summit. Two speakers addressed what they are doing in DC to advocate for the retail industries – especially swipe fees for credit cards – how to address the inflation we’re all experiencing, and the efforts being made to get more employees into the workforce.

After breakfast we went down to the exposition room to find our small display of goodies that we sent down as a sample of what kinds of products we sell at Lisa-Marie’s.

Along with some of our brochures we sent along a lobster rope basket filled with our True Blueberry Pancake and Waffle Mix, a travel size jar of Wild Blueberry Spread from Out on a Limb and a box of Wild Blueberry Green Tea from Bar Harbor Tea Company.

And of course, Andy (left) and Marie (me!, right) had to ham it up for some photo opportunities!

We represented Maine in full force!

And it was awesome to see that our ‘lil ol’ state o’ Maine has such an
impact on our entire country!

The afternoon was spent running around Capitol Hill visiting some of our Maine State Representatives. First up was Senator Angus King’s office.

Waiting in Senator King’s office we got to meet his office assistant working there for the summer who came from The County and we felt right at home surrounded by all the Maine memorabilia.

After leaving the Senate we took a walk in the 97 degree heat (with 90% humidity), and though we were feeling the sweat drip down our backs, we couldn’t help but snap a couple shots in front of the impressive Capitol.

After the photo-op pit-stop we made our way to the House where we met with Congressman Chellie Pingree’s staffer. We weren’t expecting to actually have any time with Ms. Pingree but she surprised us and we were grateful she took time out of her busy day to listen to our concerns.

That evening we went to the Award Ceremony for America’s Small Business Champion which was accompanied by a delicious dinner. The highlight of the evening was supporting Curtis as he awarded the J Thomas Weyant Award to the State Retail Executive of the year. Curtis received the award in 2018, the last time that the NRF Retail Summit met. Curtis absolutely deserves every bit of recognition that he gets.

The entire day was a whirlwind and we all feel so grateful for the whole experience. Being able to represent our home state in Washington DC and speak to policy makers about issues affecting retailers – especially small businesses here in Maine – was a true honor. Major thanks to Curtis and the entire Retail Association of Maine team. They work tirelessly in stressful situations to support the retail economy of Maine.

If you are a retail business in Maine and you aren’t already a part of the Retail Association of Maine, we urge you to consider it. The connections opened to us because of our relationship with RAM have created opportunities we never would have had without them. The Retail Association of Maine, created by retailers for retailers, keeps its members on top of business issues and trends through direct and frequent communications from staff, weekly legislative email updates, action alerts and a quarterly newsletter. They also organize a variety of events to help your network and grow your business. You should definitely check them out and consider becoming a member. Come be one of the cool kids!

One of the greatest parts about this trip was being able to do this as a family.

For the three of us to share this trip together was like a throwback to 35 years ago. I was born in Fairfax, Virginia while Andy was working in Crystal City and we lived in Alexandria. Revisiting some of the old stomping grounds together was a fun experience for sure.

The absolute best part of this trip for me was seeing Andy reunite with his childhood best friend, Sean. They were military brats together and have known each other for over 50 years. We were able to squeeze in a dinner with him and his daughters when we first arrived (we were too busy having too much fun to take any photos), and Sean picked us up for one final breakfast before we headed back to the airport. Watching my parents be able to share a drink with their long-time best friend was the cherry on top of this DC sundae.

2021 Awards – Thank you!

What a year 2021 has been! We thought anything would be easier than 2020 but this year has brought its own challenges. If there is one thing we’ve learned it’s that if we stick together and focus on the positive there is always something to be celebrated! We are still in business and still providing people with work from the finest Maine Makers, we have our health, and we’re excited for a busy holiday season. But there are also a few other things to celebrate…

DownEast Best of Maine

For the second year in a row, we were voted the Best Gift Shop for the 2021 Best of Maine by DownEast readers and our amazing community of customers and Makers. Thank you to all who voted for us! We’ll do our best to earn your vote again next year. 😉

2021 Maine
Family Business
Award Finalist

We had a few different people nominate us for the 2021 Maine Family Business Award and though we didn’t win this year we are so humbled to have been chosen as a Finalist.

Spirit of Bath Award

The Economic Vitality Committee chose Lisa-Marie and Andy as the recipients of this award for strengthening the Bath district’s exiting economic base while finding ways to expand it to meet new opportunities and challenges from outlying developments. Special thanks to Bill King for the nomination!

2021 Maine Retailer of the Year

Back in early 2020, Marissa and I (Marie) sneakily nominated Lisa-Marie’s Made in Maine as Retailer of the Year and worked hard on an application from the Retail Association of Maine that included testimonials from some of our Makers as well as some of our team members. We’re lucky to work with such amazing people and wanted to share some of their kind words about Lisa-Marie and our family business.

I met Lisa-Marie Stewart 25 years ago at a craft show when we were both raising little kids and creating our own small craft businesses. Lisa-Marie began helping to direct craft shows in the area and she was good at it. She eventually decided that she would open her own store and promote fellow Maine crafters in a year-round location.   Lisa-Marie knows the craft industry and has helped countless Maine artisans and crafters get their products to market. Lisa-Marie’s Made in Maine became one of my best sales locations and has been for 17 years. My friend Lisa-Marie, her right-hand man, Andy, and daughter Marie have established a thriving Maine business supporting Maine artisans state-wide!

– Gail Miller of Miller Designs
Lisa-Marie and Gail Miller in 2013 at our 15 year anniversary party in Bath, Maine

I met Lisa Marie at her business about 17 years ago. I had started making necklaces out of Sand Dollars and she was the first shop I approached about selling them. She was so welcoming and helpful to me then and continues to be now. She is a role model and someone I look up to as a mother, an artist, and a local business owner. My daughters were barely 1 & 2 when I first went into her Bath shop. She not only encouraged me as an artist but my daughters as well. Dory, my oldest who is almost 19 now and off enjoying her freshman year of college made Dog leashes out of my recycled lobster trap wrap and sold them at her shop. She would splice the rope and add the clips~ they were loved by many especially Lisa Marie. Dory moved on from that business to running her own lobster business. Lisa Marie is like family to us, and has watched my girls grow just like I have enjoyed watching her children grow into amazing adults. I cannot say enough about how wonderful Lisa Marie is as and how grateful I am to her for helping me make my business a success.

– Sarah Kulis of Sarah’s Sand Dollars

Thanks to the pesky pandemic, lots of events were cancelled in 2020, including the award for Retailer of the Year. So, in September of 2021 when Amy and Curtis reached out to me saying that we were selected for 2021, I was over the moon. This was also the first time that they had an insider to help make the award a surprise for the recipients. So we plotted and planned and arranged a time for them to come to our Bath location to surprise Lisa-Marie and Andy.

👈 👀 🎉

Watch the surprise award ceremony held on
October 27th in our
Bath, Maine location
after our staff meeting.

Only a few members of our team knew about the award and it was such a joy to be a part of such a well-deserved surprise for Lisa-Marie and Andy. Read the press release here.

Thanks to the Retail Association of Maine for choosing us and for all the hard work that they do to support Maine’s businesses and inspiring economic development.

We are grateful to have received so much recognition these past few months and we couldn’t do it without our amazing family of employees and the talented and creative Maine Makers we work with. We also are grateful for the support of the City of Bath, Main Street Bath, Portland Downtown and the Portland Regional Chamber of Commerce. It is organizations like these that keep our wonderful cities running and creating wonderful places for people to visit from near and far. We are grateful to exist in these communities and look forward to providing Mainers and “people from away” with unique, quality, Maine Made products for many years to come.

A HUGE Thank You: Voted Down East’s Best of Maine 2021 Gift Shop

Maine’s First Annual Wild Blueberry Weekend

“I am proud to declare the first annual Wild Blueberry Weekend in Maine to honor the importance of Maine’s wild blueberries and the hardworking Maine people who grow and bring them to market,” said Governor Janet Mills. “I encourage everyone to visit one of the participating wild blueberry farms or to sample Maine-grown wild blueberry products at the many restaurants, inns, breweries, wineries, ice cream shops, and distilleries selling them during Wild Blueberry Weekend.”

July 23, 2021 – State of Maine: The Office of Governor Janet T. Mills

Wild blueberries (Vaccinium angustifolium) emerged on the rocky, acidic soils of the Barrens of Maine following the retreat of the glaciers more than 10,000 years ago. These wild blueberries, which are not planted but grow naturally, were first managed and harvested by the Wabanaki and are now grown by 485 Maine farms on 38,660 acres, primarily within Washington, Hancock, Knox, and Waldo counties

“These wild blueberries…are now grown by 485 Maine farms on 38,660 acres.”

Gov. Janet Mills

Maine produces nearly 100% of all wild blueberries in the United States, and they are one of the top three specialty crops produced in the state! Maine’s wild blueberry growers and businesses are significant contributors to Maine’s economy and are vital assets to Maine’s rural communities. These tiny sweet berries can be enjoyed fresh during the height of summer in Maine, while Individual Quick Freezing (IQF) technology allows consumers to buy berries frozen at the peak of freshness all year round, all over the world.

Wild blueberries are recognized as Maine’s official state berry, and blueberry pie is recognized as the official state dessert. And what goes better with dessert than a warm, cozy mug of Bar Harbor’s Blueberry Tea or Carrabassett’s Blueberry Cobbler coffee?

Maine wild blueberries are one of the world’s top 10 superfoods – a deep purple fruit that is rich in antioxidants and health benefits.

This year, the Wild Blueberry Commission of Maine is launching Maine’s first annual Wild Blueberry Weekend to encourage residents and visitors to explore blueberry farms and participating establishments and eat, drink, and experience the sea of blue in August before the barrens turn a deep red in the fall.

Now, therefore, be it resolved that I, Janet T. Mills, Governor of the State of Maine, do hereby proclaim the weekend of August 7th and 8th, 2021 as Wild Blueberry Weekend in Maine, and I encourage all people to recognize the vital contributions made by the State’s wild blueberry growers and businesses to our economy, and to participate in activities that celebrate and honor the wild Maine blueberry.

A Word on Masks

We hope you’ve given yourself a pat on the back. This past year has been a test of patience, endurance, sanity, and of course, personal and communal safety. Which brings us to our main point: we know everyone is tired of wearing masks. But we’ve made it this far; we’ve prioritized the health and safety of our communities, even when it meant making personal sacrifices.

As restrictions lift and we open up our shops to maximum, limitless customer capacity, we are still keeping in mind those who are at high risk or unable to receive vaccines, like immunocompromised individuals and young children.

We know the simplest and most effective solution to stop the spread of COVID-19 is wearing a mask.
We know they help prevent community spread, and for these reasons we prefer for everyone to wear a mask when anyone visits our stores and shops in-person…whether you’re vaccinated or not.
We care about you, our wonderful customers, friends, and Maine Makers, who have stood by and supported us throughout this pandemic, and we are forever grateful for you.

So on that note, we hope that you join us in protecting the safety of our community, continuing to mask up indoors and showing each other the kindness and respect everyone deserves. We’re all in this together, and we can’t wait to smile (under our masks) at every visitor that walks through our doors this year.
