Forget lobster rolls. How about lobster lotion? A Maine-based skincare company has created a one-of-a-kind cream using a protein found in lobster: the MARIN Soothing Hydration Cream!

It all started when Patrick Breeding and Amber Boutiette were bioengineering undergrads at UMaine Orono. Amber was struggling with debilitating eczema. “I was one of those people who tried everything, from steroids to bland moisturizers that don’t really do anything,” said Boutiette. “Nothing was really helping my condition and I was pretty much just living with it.”

That is, until they learned about marine glycoproteins, which allow lobsters to regenerate limbs. “In the same way they do that, we thought through the literature and some anecdotal evidence, it could help repair the skin barrier,” said Breeding.

They created a basic prototype with the proteins and Vaseline and were shocked by the results. “Within about two days I started to see a different. And after two weeks my eczema flares were completely cleared and it was lifechanging,” said Boutiette.

They immediately got to work, from grant-writing to pitch competitions, getting enough capital to perfect their recipe for the MARIN Soothing Hydration Cream, and launch Marin Skincare in 2020. “People who are struggling with the same condition that I have, some for 70 plus years, for them to see the same results and experience the same relief that I did, it’s amazing and the most fulfilling thing ever,” says Boutiette.

The company is also working with Luke’s Lobster in Portland to up-cycle lobster glycoproteins, keeping the process local to Maine!
