These nautical dog toys are made by Maine native, Carolyn. After graduating college in the Spring of 2011, she was offered the chance to join her friend working full-time on his lobster boat. She jumped at the opportunity and quickly fell in love with being on the water. Majoring in Outdoor Recreation, she always knew she wanted to be involved in the outdoors and lobstering gave her a chance to do just that.
When she didn’t think life could get better, it did. In the Fall, Maggie Lou came into her life. She had wanted a dog for years, but with all the moving in college between universities as well as dorms and apartments, she wasn’t able to bring a puppy into her life. Now settled in her home in Downeast Maine, at 6 months old, her new little buddy came in the form of a yellow lab.
Carolyn and Maggie Lou had a great winter and she brought so much joy to Carolyn’s life. Although she was able to take a few rides on the lobster boat that Fall, Carolyn couldn’t wait to let her come to work. As Spring 2012 came rolling in she was very excited to start her second season lobstering and to finally give her puppy a chance to really test out her sea legs. Carolyn was not surprised when Maggie Lou loved it as much as she does… Any morning Carolyn puts on her boots, she can expect to see Maggie Lou impatiently waiting by the door, hoping it’s a day she gets to join her human on the boat.
When you live, work, and breathe fishing like many do on an island, you see a lot of rope. Over the last couple seasons Carolyn learned a lot, including some new knots to tie. Before long she was making toys for her new pup with any extra rope she found lying around. She had no idea that her rope toys would become Maggie Lou’s favorite toys. Before long, the more rope toys she made for Maggie Lou, the more and more requests she began to get from friends who wanted rope toys for their dogs. And so, Downeast Nautical was born.
These rope toys have brought so much joy into Carolyn and Maggie Lou’s home and continue to each and every day. We hope that you and your 4-legged friends find as much enjoyment in your toys.
